סמינר סגל: פרופסור דבורה ינוב בנושא: 'Practice-learning: Inquiry across the practice life-cycle'

Much of the practice studies literature, especially in a phenomenological vein, focuses on novices learning to become masters.  Learning is the central concern of these theories—but it is only the novice who learns, motivated to develop what the master “has.”  This paper takes up three under-theorized areas in that approach. One is the character of learning at other phases of practicing, from a pre-novice stage, to a post-mastery phase suggesting a life-cycle theory of practitioners and practices and lifelong learning across it.  A second under-theorized area then emerges:  form(s) of learning characteristic of mastery itself, from maintaining that level of practice to changing it, including in dealing with errors.  Having developed competence, masters seem to lose their ability to inquire, “rushing to judgment” or making “premature diagnoses” based on the assumption that they know all there is to know. Might learning to be a master contribute to some things being “unlearned” that are key to good practicing, thereby generating problems in the practice? Third, practice theorizing needs to incorporate “tools” that are human.

ההרצאה תתקיים בשעה 14:00 בחדר HUB-2 בבניין מנהל עסקים.

Drawing on examples of practices thickly described, this paper first elaborates on what novice-learning looks like and then points to questions raised by these under-theorized areas in practice-theorizing.  It calls for comparative studies of practices to support such theorizing, which draw on ethnographic observational methods producing sufficiently detailed descriptive data as to enable such comparisons.  And it points to challenges for practitioner education of the need to remain open to inquiry at the level of mastery
